"There are about 1.5 million adopted children in the United States, which is 2% of the population, or one out of 50 children."
AdoptJoy is a mobile application designed to streamline the child adoption process while providing emotional support and guidance to prospective adoptive parents. This case study examines the user experience design process and solutions implemented to address the complex challenges in adoption services.
The adoption process is often:
Overwhelming and emotionally challenging for prospective parents
Complicated by lengthy paperwork and unclear procedures
Lacking in transparent communication between parties
Difficult to track and manage across multiple stages
Started with Survey's to understand the Target audience and to create Personas as to understand the main Goals, and Pain Points of the stakeholders.

The survey yielded helpful information but was a little hard to go off of because the participants’ roles in the adoption process were varied. Another useful set of data we collected was from in-person and phone interviews set up with adoptive parents, adopted children, and adoption caseworkers. One of our interviewees, Emily, is very involved in the adoption world. She is an adoptive mother who has adopted three boys and had this to say about the adoption process:
“Beginning the process was intimidating because I didn’t know anything about adoption. Adoption agencies seem to bury objective information. I couldn’t find a single place that outlined all the information in one place.”
The Focus:
PERSONA:
Who is our audience?
After speaking with a diverse group of people who had been through the adoption process, many other adoptive parents echoed Emily’s statement that there was a lack of an unbiased place to gain information about adoption that was cohesive and structured. Also, cost-effectiveness was still among one of the highest concerns that were brought up. This helped us develop our persona Jane Foxx, a woman who is looking to adopt but doesn’t know where to start to find information and worries about how much it will end up costing her and her husband.
